about
When Jimena isn't making beats in her DIY studio by the Caribbean sea, she embarks on long bicycle rides on the road between Buritaca and Puerto Nuevo, in the heart of the Tyrona National Park of Colombia. During one of those cycling adventures, she got lost in a gigantic banana plantation. Aside from being impressed by the immensity of the place, she instinctively felt the environment was filled with dark history and suffering. A few conversations on the subject with locals and a bit of research inspired her new song, "Plátano Maduro".
"Plátano Maduro" denounces clear-cutting tracts of primary rainforest in favor of banana monoculture. In the Caribbean in particular, where plantations are located along the coasts, this kind of runoff has caused considerable damage to estuaries and coral reefs. In her new song, Jimena reconciles the gut feeling she encountered when crossing those banana fields with the reality of a process of producing bananas to feed worldwide demand that has been, and continues to be, environmentally destructive.
